Practical Knowledge

“When we were kids we were scared of ghosts or dragons. Adults’ dragon is death. And I like the fact of somebody facing the … dragon in his life and this shows how to deal with that.”

-Alejandro González Iñárritu

This quote references “Biutiful”, which is basically an experiment of how upsetting a movie can possibly be. Javier Bardem stars as a human smuggler diagnosed with terminal cancer. Iñárritu ends the brutal film with a moment of comic respite that speaks to the above theme. The movie is also a testament to the fact that Europe’s migrant crisis precedes the Syrian civil war and the current security debate fueled by ISIS attacks.
